Latest Car news
Here are some recent highlights as we reach the final stages of building BLOODHOUND SSC – as you can read, there’s more to a world land speed record attempt than building the Car. Follow us on social media or visit our website regularly to keep up to date as the team forges ahead.
Breaking news! BLOODHOUND gets its colours
The BLOODHOUND monocoque is in the paintshop and the team can't wait to see the finished thing back here in the Technical Centre tomorrow!
Paint-by-Simon is expertly applying special aircraft paint by Akzo Nobel in a state-of-the-art spray booth at 3M’s training and development centre. Keep visiting our website and follow us on social media to see more parts of the car in their new painted livery during this month.
Ti floor progress
The titanium (Ti) floor has been completed. This will protect the underside of the carbon fibre nose section and the cockpit. The Ti floor has 3,000 rivets, but the process of riveting it together requires a lot more than just drilling 3,000 holes….here’s why.
Driver’s air supply
There’s more to BLOODHOUND than building the Car. Driver Andy Green and Kevin Murray have been working with product sponsor CamLock on the driver’s air supply. This requires as much careful attention as everything else, as the mouthpiece has to fit snugly inside Andy’s race helmet to ensure a constant supply of clean air in the unlikely event of a cockpit fire.
Refuelling rig
The rocket’s refuelling rig is now complete on an Ifor Williams flatbed trailer, with the yellow 1,000 litre tank to hold the high test peroxide, the rocket’s oxidiser and two 1,000 litre IBCs which will hold water for firefighting and to dilute any HTP leak. Plumbed by Swagelok, this rig will be used to fill the Car prior to every desert run.

Trial assembly of rear deltas
The rear deltas are the aerodynamic structures that cover the Car’s rear suspension. Technicians from the RAF's 71 Squadron have done fantastic work this month assembling the 3D jigsaw and 'offering them up' to the car.

Join in the Model Rocket Car Challenge!
Schools and youth clubs are invited to join the Model Rocket Car Challenge, a global competition backed by Guinness World Records to set a world record by building and racing a model rocket car in one of four categories. Inspired by the rules that will govern BLOODHOUND’s record-breaking attempts, the model rocket cars must blast along a wire and through a set of timing gates twice within an hour to be eligible to set a record. Find out how to enter at BLOODHOUND BLAST.
Creative learning
"As excitement and tension mounted in the playground, the entire year group began the countdown: '5…4…3…2…1!' And with the kind of 'Whoosh!' normally associated with a firework, the first model rocket car shot off from the start line…." Find out how Ambassadors from BP are inspiring secondary school students with BLOODHOUND activities.
