Two royal visits to our Technical Centre

HRH the Duke of Edinburgh quizzes Andy GreenHis Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh visited the BLOODHOUND Technical Centre last month to meet the team and see the world's first 1,000mph car.

On the same day, His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester also visited the Technical Centre in his role as patron of the Newcomen Society, which included the visit as part of its summer meeting itinerary.

Be part of our next Guinness World Record attempt

K'NEX BloodhoundBLOODHOUND's 1K Club is aiming for its own Guinness World Record - and we want your help!

As we reported last month, K'NEX, the construction toy manufacturer, has provided thousands of K'NEX pieces, enough to build a full sized version of BLOODHOUND SSC.When completed it will be 13.5m long, making it the largest K'NEX model in the world.

The 1K Club has been working with Royal British Legion Industries to design and construct this spectacular model, and is running open days in August for families, clubs and organisations to come and help build it. We can also provide corporate days for clients or staff. Everyone who helps will get a certificate once the record has been ratified.

The Public Open Days will be held on 9, 16 and 23 August at the RBLI, Hall Road, Aylesford, Kent, ME20 7NL and the model will be unveiled at Brooklands Museum on 29 August.

To book tickets and for more details of public and corporate days, and for sponsorship opportunities, see the K'NEX page on our website.

"My other car goes 1,000mph"

Individuals and organisations can see their name travel at 1,000mph by donating to the BLOODHOUND project. Here's how - the flag on the car's fin will be completely made up of the names of people and organisations who have donated through our 'Names on the fin' scheme, with £10 for personal sponsorship, £50 for schools, colleges and groups, and an enhanced scheme at £500 for businesses and other organisations.

Give your support to BLOODHOUND - find out how you can get your name on the fin.

Latest car news

It's been a busy month for the manufacturing team - here are some milestones they've reached:

  • The trial fit of the upper chassis to the lower chassis is complete and the team is in the final stages of snagging and drill off for the upper. Then they will start to disassemble it so it can sent out to be primed, ready for the final build, bonding and riveting.

  • Major fin components have been completed and assembly will start shortly.

  • The air brake door concept design has been approved for manufacture by our composites manufacturing partners - our composite team can now fully detail the design.

A day in the life of a BLOODHOUND Ambassador

Sasha Penfold is a Customer Service Manager at Rolls-Royce who spends her spare time as a BLOODHOUND Ambassador attending public events and visiting groups like beaver scouts, sharing her enthusiasm for engineering. Check out our Cisco TV episode which tells her story.

ITV has also been covering BLOODHOUND's outreach work in schools, in this report from Kent.

If you would like a BLOODHOUND Ambassador to come into your school or club to talk about the car and engage children with hands-on projects, please contact Dawn Fitt.

Become an Ambassador

We always need more volunteers in order to achieve BLOODHOUND's educational goal of encouraging the take-up of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). All Ambassadors are trained and then given access to all of our online educational resources on BLOODHOUND BLAST, the Project's free online community before engaging with children in schools, after-school clubs, Science Fairs, Big Bang events and national events.

If you are interested in becoming an Ambassador please contact Seema Quraishi.

Callout to teachers

Did you know that you can engage with the education programme through our online learning community at www.bloodhoundblast.com where you will find lots of BLOODHOUND-related classroom resources? Our Education team is currently busy developing additional workshops which will be made available on BLOODHOUND BLAST after the summer.

Our Education team is always looking for input from teachers, so if you have any questions or topic areas you would like us to include, please get in touch.
