BLOODHOUND NEWSLETTER - JULY 2014

BLOODHOUND - a supersonic land speed racing car designed to reach speeds of 1,000mph

Welcome to the latest BLOODHOUND newsletter, which will now be published monthly to keep you right up-to-date with our news as we get ever closer to the first runs of the car.

Please share this with anyone you know who might be interested in finding out about BLOODHOUND SSC and check out our website at www.bloodhoundssc.com for more information about the project.

Listen to BLOODHOUND!

Before you read any further, get in the mood by listening to the sound of BLOODHOUND SSC. Our sound effect isn't the full 140db, but will give you some idea how the car will sound when it runs in South Africa next year and in 2016.

BLOODHOUND inspires new infrastructure project for Hakskeen Pan communities

model car on HakskeenpanWe are delighted to announce that a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed with the Northern Cape Provincial Government in South Africa. The MOU formalises the partnership that could result in the Hakskeen Pan emerge as the leading land-speed record destination. The Northern Cape Government and BLOODHOUND plan to convert the MOU which was signed on May 29th into a formal public-private partnership agreement in the coming months.

In addition to the Government authorising the clearance of stones, and camping and tourism arrangements, the South African Department of Water Affairs has committed to building a 150km water pipeline capable of delivering 27 litres of water per second, 24 hours per day to small towns and villages around Hakskeen Pan to feed farms and smallholdings.

Construction is expected to start in September this year, with the first phase finished by June 2015. The improvements to the water infrastructure will lead to the regeneration of communities and lead and the development of the local economy.

We are proud that the BLOODHOUND Project is having such a profoundly positive effect on the local communities prior to the car arriving in South Africa. For more on this story, please see BLOODHOUND enriches South African Community

Andy Green's 1,000mph office revealed

On 13th June we unveiled the cockpit of BLOODHOUND SSC. The state-of-the-art carbon fibre monocoque has been tailored to the needs of driver Andy Green and will be his supersonic office during record attempts in the South African desert in 2015 and 2016. Hand crafted by URT Group, the monocoque has taken more than 10,000 hours to design and manufacture.

Andy has drawn on his experience of flying fast jets and driving World Land Speed Record winners to design the dashboard and cockpit layout. Good ergonomics are vital given that BLOODHOUND SSC will cover a mile in 3.6 seconds, or 150m in the (300 millisecond) blink of an eye. BLOODHOUND’s dash also features two precision-engineered analogue Rolex instruments: a chronograph with built-in stopwatch, and a speedometer graduated up to 1,100mph (1,770km/h). The speedometer is a vital back-up to allow the Car to be stopped safely should the digital dashboard fail, while the chronograph will help to time the start-up and cool-down of the jet and help to monitor the performance of other systems.

Find out about "Andy's office", experience the 360° tour and see the videos.

Read about Andy's take on his new office in his diary.

The cockpit unveiling was also the first time that the upper and lower chassis were put together - a major landmark for the car.

First wheel passes spin test

Wheel sensorsGreat news in June as BLOODHOUND's first wheel passed the spin tests at Rolls-Royce with flying colours and so we can now get the first two sets of desert wheels machined.

We offer Bronze or Gold 1K Club membership, with Gold membership offering the opportunity of seeing the car run in the UK next year. This will be a unique experience. We still have people come up and say that they saw Thrust SSC run at Farnborough and how unforgettable it was. It would be such a shame to miss this once in lifetime opportunity. Record-breaking K'NEX model - join us to build

K'NEX BloodhoundSSCK'NEX, the construction toy manufacturer, has given us enough K'NEX to build a full-size model of the car. This has been designed by, and is being constructed by, the Royal British Legion and will be the largest K'NEX model ever made, so will go into the Guinness Book of Records. Public open days will be held during August so you and your guests will have the opportunity to visit the Royal British Legion, help with the construction, get a build certificate and to enjoy lots of other activities in what will be a really fun visit and a great summer family day out, club event or even corporate activity.

There are opportunities for companies large and small to advertise around the model build which is being filmed and will raise a great deal of media interest. This is a great way to show your involvement in the project and promote your organisation or club.

If you are interested in taking part, find out more at http://www.bloodhoundssc.com/KNEX.

Ambassadors in schools and clubs

Call for more Ambassadors!

Mayfield model car buildersMany thanks to all those who contacted us to sign up as BLOODHOUND Ambassadors after reading the last Newsletter. However, we still need more volunteers in order to achieve BLOODHOUND's educational goal of encouraging the take-up of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects.

If you are interested and enthusiastic about the BLOODHOUND Project, why not share that with children of all ages by becoming an Ambassador! When you become a BLOODHOUND Ambassador we'll give you training and give you access to the plethora of online educational resources on BLOODHOUND BLAST, the Project's free online community. We'll then ask you to engage with children in schools, after-school clubs, Science Fairs, Big Bang events and national events.

If you are interested in supporting this vital aspect of the Project please contact Seema Quraishi by emailing her at seema.quraishi@bloodhoundssc.com and she can send you the details of how you can become part of the BLOODHOUND educational outreach programme.

Rocket Day at Mayfield School, Walsall

Here's how Simon Procter, a Bloodhound Education Associate/Ambassador, summed up his recent visit to Mayfield school.

Mayfield rocket car"Last month the children at Mayfield had a magnificent day of fun and learning thanks to Jas Thandi of BLOODHOUND and the 'crucial' Ambassador engineering team. Jas arrived with his rocket kits and explained the method of construction to Year 6 students, who already take part in the school's motorised car project.

"After building their cars and learning about how to safely race and measure speeds, the cars were set off individually in front of a lovely crowd of pupils, teachers and parents, with the fastest - shaped like BLOODHOUND - reaching a brilliant 68mph!"

You can read more about the Mayfield day on our website. Then, if you're interested and would like a BLOODHOUND Ambassador to come into your school or club to talk about the car and engage children with hands-on projects, please contact Dawn Fitt on dawn.fitt@bloodhoundssc.com

Education update

Recently, the BLOODHOUND Education team has been engaged in further delivery of our KS2/3 Department for Education programme in Bristol and Kent. Although we focus on STEM subjects, in Kent we were delighted to see a brilliant fusion of art and science inspired by CFD (computational fluid dynamics) images created by Dr Ben Evans. The response to the programme as a whole has been fantastic.

"Please pass on my enormous thanks to everyone in the Bloodhound team for the events last week. They were absolutely superb! The pupils were engaged throughout all the activities - they thoroughly enjoyed it all!" Charles Dickens School

Our Education team will continue to develop workshops and online resources during the school summer holidays, so if you have ideas for resources you would like us to look at, please send us your suggestions to dawn.fitt@bloodhoundssc.com
