Tuesday, 5 March, 2013

Following the first round of applications for EPSRC seed funding that has been made available through Bloodhound@University, we can now announce that 8 bids were successful.

The overall aim of the funding is to provide resources to further populate the Kbox and supplement the data coming directly from the engineering team with resources that can be used for teaching and learning.

Bids were submitted on a wide range of topics from Weight Optimisation to Social Media Strategy, with SMEs as well as Universities being successful.  For a summary of all 8 funded projects see below.

We anticipate announcing a second round of funding very shortly, details to be posted on this website.

Summary of Successful bids

University of Bath

Social Media strategy

An action research project to advise an effective social media strategy for the Bloodhound project.  Outcomes to be posted as a case study.

University of Liverpool

Simulation Model & Environment

A real-time model and environment will be developed for use in flight simulators allowing design modifications to be test-driven.

Df{X} Ltd

This SME will create case studies on 3 areas of increasing importance in today’s design and manufacturing environment.

  • Front Suspension Design Optimisation
  • Minimum Weight Design & Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) Reduction
  • Novel Design Substantiation & Proof of Concept

Swansea University

Applications of Additive Layer Manufacture

Investigating on the use of ALM as a production technique, the evolution of an electronics box for the car will be followed from initial concept through to installation on BLOODHOUND SSC.  A student glider competition will also be established.

CFD

A user-friendly, web-based application will be developed to enable some basic CFD concepts to be explored.

Numerical Modelling in MATLAB

A series of teaching resources will be developed for University level students based round performance predictions for BLOODHOUND SSC.  These will cover introduction to programming, numerical methods and optimisation.
