The winners of the SPEED Art Competition in South Africa, a joint initiative by the William Humphreys Art Gallery (WHAG) in Kimberley and the BLOODHOUND Supersonic Car (SCC) Project, will be announced on Tuesday 22 October at a function at the gallery at 18:00.

The prize-giving coincides with a welcoming function for attendees of the South African Museums Association’s 77th national conference, to be held in Kimberley.

Artists of all ages were invited to submit works in any medium. For inspiration, they were asked to visit the website www.bloodhoundssc.com which features news and videos about the British BLOODHOUND SCC team’s attempt to set a new land speed record on Hakskeenpan in the Mier Municipality of the Northern Cape.

A selection of the best entries received will be on display at WHAG until Friday 15 November.

The art competition was only open to residents of the Northern Cape and approximately 450 entries were received. However, Dave Rowley, BLOODHOUND SCC education director in South Africa hopes that it could become a national initiative promoted by galleries countrywide. “BLOODHOUND isn’t just a Northern Cape project; rather, we’d like to inspire young people across the country through this record-breaking initiative to become passionate about science and engineering,” says Rowley. “Art is a wonderful prime medium to use in this process.”

“The gallery initiated the competition after the success of a related competition earlier this year in which Northern Cape learners were challenged to design the artwork for the helmet of BLOODHOUND driver, Andy Green,” says WHAG’s Liz Bosman.

Dirk Coetzee, a 17-year old matriculant from Adamantia High School in Kimberley who won the South African leg of the helmet competition, will also receive his prize at the function. The other winners of the helmet competition include Lindiwe Maganelo from Molehabangwe Primary School (Grade 4-6); Enrique van der Merwe from Postmasburg Primary School (Grade 7-9 );  Mogomotsi Mandela from Adamantia High School (runner-up Grade 10-12); and Yolanda Mtombeni from Kimberley Girls High School (second overall).
