We have had the following correspondence about how one school is using BLOODHOUND SSC in its curriculum. Thanks for the feedback - we'll try and get some pictures when the activities have taken place!

I am putting together a week long STEM type activity for the week after SATs.

Initially the children will build model cars using K'Nex kits and test out different body shapes, wheel sizes and tyre treads.

These will be tested against each other using good old gravity as the motive force. Next we will move on to attaching a balloon for a bit of rocket power and I will link this to the Bloodhound SSC project .

Next will be water powered rockets flying along a washing line, this uses a practical plan from you website - thanks for that.

Then we will move onto compressed gas powered cars - as per the F1 in Schools type activities - these use a balsa wood body streamlined by pupils, axles and wheels fitted and then a CO2 gas cartridge is loaded up. These will be run and speed tested on a course with a fishing line tether.

Lots to learn about friction, streamlining, rocket propulsion etc. and linked very much to the aims of the SSC education ethos.

.... and then the finale I am ordering some easy build rockets, a launcher etc and some proper rocket motors, the kids will get three launches each, a recovery chute is built in. Sir has bought himself a larger model rocket that will take a payload. Currently considering launching a small egg that the children will have designed a method of protecting against impact or a small video camera to record the flight.

I will be running this independently of any outside agencies as we are a small school and need to be flexible in our approach. Our funding incidentally has been provided by the Edina Trust who support science in Lancashire schools, and we are very grateful for this, as we would not have been able to provide this fantastic opportunity without their financial assistance.
