BLOODHOUND SSC – a supersonic racing car designed to reach speeds of 1,000mph (1,600km/h).
Welcome to BLOODHOUND’s monthly newsletter, with the latest news about the Project.
We have an update on when the Car will run in the UK and South Africa, plus the latest news about the Car from the BLOODHOUND Technical Centre (BTC). There are also details of Rocket Car Experience events and an Open Day at the BTC, when you can come and see the Car and meet the Team.
Check out our website at www.bloodhoundssc.com for more information, videos and images.
Project timings - update
The BLOODHOUND Project has announced the latest news on timings for tests and World Land Speed Record runs. Our goal is to test the Car on the runway at Newquay Aerohub during 2017, following static ‘tie-down’ tests of the EJ200 jet, installed in the Car. We also need to do further work on the monopropellant rocket in increase its power output and give us an additional performance margin when we begin our record campaign in South Africa next year.
You can read more detail about this and a word on our schedule from project director Richard Noble on our website.
Engineering update
Our teams are still working hard on various aspects of the Car. Latest news is that:
- Our Build Team have been continuing to assemble the Car in its runway specification, ready for 250mph trials at the Newquay Aerohub later this year.
- The Team has also test fitted and calibrated the power steering system. (Did you know that our Car has a steering ratio of 5 degrees, compared with around 20 degrees for a regular car? This means BLOODHOUND SSC has a turning circle of 240m!)
- Systems Engineer Milton Roach has been flat out (literally) working on the cockpit wiring loom. It's being wired up on a mock-up, before being transferred into the Car.
- AirBorn have been measuring up for the car's wiring loom. #BLOODHOUNDisGo
Build a Rocket Car for Easter!
During the Easter school holiday we’re running more of our brilliant Rocket Car Experience workshops at the BLOODHOUND Technical Centre in Avonmouth, near Bristol. Bring the whole family for our interactive presentations and see the real BLOODHOUND Car being constructed. Each child can then build their own rocket car and see it whizz down the runway at speeds of up to 55mph!
Workshops are running in the morning (9am-12 noon) on Wednesday 12 April and the afternoon (1-4pm) on Tuesday 18 April. Numbers are limited, however, so book now!
May Day Family Extravaganza – Monday 1st May
Come along to the BLOODHOUND Technical Centre on Monday 1st May (10.00 to 16.00) to enjoy a full day of fun, information and activities, and meet Richard Noble and other members of the team. There will be lots of activities to take part in, including making a family rocket car, the K’Nex Challenge, the BLOODHOUND Driving Experience and an Airzooka shy. You can even sit in the lorry we use to transport our show car all over Europe! Adults £20; family ticket £45 (2 adults and up to 3 children); additional children £5 ... plus with every family ticket, you will get a free rocket racer kit! 1K Club members can get a 10% discount by booking tickets here (login required).
Our engineers learn with plastic bottles
Our Ambassadors always report how fulfilling it is to go into schools and inspire children with hands-on activities relating to BLOODHOUND. Andy Higgs recently spent a day at a primary school showing students how even modifying simple cars made from plastic bottles uses the same iterative design processes that engineers employ. Read his story and then contact us if you’d like to become an Ambassador or have one visit your school.

MIT place for student inspired by BLOODHOUND
A student at Newham Collegiate Sixth Form Centre has been offered a place at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), citing a visit from BLOODHOUND driver Andy Green, holder of the World Land Speed Record, as among her inspirations. MIT is ranked number 1 university in the world, and Tafsia Shikdar’s offer to study Engineering and Physics will see her follow in the footsteps of prestigious alumni including astronaut Buzz Aldrin and Nobel Prize winner Richard Feynman. Congratulations Tafsia!
