What’s it like to drive BLOODHOUND?
It’s the question that only one person in the world will ever truly know the answer to – and that’s Andy Green after he’s done his high speed runs in South Africa. However, based on his experience as a jet fighter pilot and current holder of the World Land Speed Record, plus everything he knows about the Car and the controls, he does his best to explain what it will feel like to drive BLOODHOUND at 1,000mph in his diary this month. (And the answer isn’t just "noisy"!)
BBC micro:bit model rocket car competition
The BLOODHOUND Project has teamed up with Microsoft to integrate micro:bit into our model Rocket Car programme as part of a competition for students aged 11 to 16. Thanks to the British Army, we have funding for foam model rocket car kits for 10,000 teams nationally, with extra kits available to order. The kits can be modified by school teams to run as fast as possible, offering a great opportunity to get students excited about science, work as a team and get hands-on experience of programming and aerodynamics.
There are two competitions, one for England and Wales and another for Scotland.
The fastest 30 teams will be invited to race their cars in the final at Santa Pod Raceway on June 30th and the winning team will be invited to Newquay Airport to see BLOODHOUND SSC make its 250mph runs before going to South Africa.

Inspiring students in South Africa
A year ago BLOODHOUND Ambassador Chris Lowther reported on his successful visit to South Africa, where he spent part of his holiday visiting local schools to spread the word about the BLOODHOUND Programme. This winter he returned and found the students to be more enthusiastic than ever. Find out how the BLOODHOUND Project is inspiring South African students to discover the possibilities of STEM subjects.
Listen to Andy deliver the UWE Lecture
Last month Andy Green delivered the 2016 BLOODHOUND Lecture at the University of West of England in Bristol, giving an update on the Project and talking about the impact that that it has been having on young people in education. You can listen to the lecture (Andy’s address starts after about 20 minutes) and then watch him being interviewed by Ian Mean, former editor of the Western Daily Press.
